About this centre

Kumon Block 8 Gaborone Centre offers ‘virtual lessons’ via the Zoom and ‘physical lessons’ at the centre which is located within close proximity to the Kubu Road leading to Gaborone International School within the Block 8 Gaborone area. Our virtual lessons offer a supportive setting granting students the chance to complete their daily study online, through instruction and guidance alongside other students from the centre. The physical centre is child friendly and ideal for study! It has a study area for students to work, it has a separate reading area which students can use for uninterrupted reading or study whilst waiting to be picked up, it also has separate waiting areas for both student and parents and a limited parking area outside the Centre.
We have friendly staff waiting to support your children develop valuable life skills and build their confidence as they become independent learners the KUMON WAY! Their progress through the programmes is tailored to their individual needs, ensuring each and every child continues to grow to their full potential at their own pace!

About the Instructor

I am Portia Mhlauli, the instructor for Kumon Block 8 Gaborone Centre. My Kumon journey started off challenging but has made me proud. It was challenging because, in my opinion, I felt like I did not have the time and capability to be that involved in assisting my daughter further than what I was already undertaking. However, it has been fulfilling to do so. Now, I am very excited to take this Kumon adventure even further!
Like any loving parent, I wanted my daughter to get extra tutoring because I realised how making mistakes made her feel at school. An acquaintance recommended Kumon. We started off with some resistance towards the programme! We had not grasped the SELF LEARNING AT THE ‘JUST RIGHT’ LEVEL MODEL!
We are still doing Kumon today!
Kumon has helped my daughter realize her potential and work hard toward achieving her goals. It has helped us lay a solid foundation of sound life skills with attention being paid to self-discovery and self-management. I learnt from her and through her!
Me, being a parent that loves working and advocating for growth & development in Educational Psychology and being attentive to children, decided to not just experience this alone. We would like to share this experience with other children and parents! Therefore, I have opened a Kumon centre so that I can help as many families as possible with their Kumon journey.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
