Kumon Parklands West Study Centre was amongst the first Kumon Centres to open in Kenya in 2000 and is one of the leading centres in Africa, having won awards for having the highest percentage of students working beyond Curriculum level in both Maths and English for many years. It is located at the prestigious Oshwal College on 2nd Avenue Parklands, with ample parking facilities. We follow Kumon’s Mission Statement “by discovering the potential of each individual child and by developing his/her ability to the maximum, we aim to foster confident, capable humans and thus contribute to the global community’. We ensure that every child, from pre-school upto adult, study at a pace and level that is comfortable for them, through individualised instruction and personal attention. Through this progressive learning method, students develop the art of self-learning and are eventually confident enough to take on more difficult levels on their own! We work hand in hand with parents to ensure that the correct support is given at home, so that students persevere even when they start working independently, beyond grade level. We pride ourselves in our regular communication via Newsletters, progress reports and presenting certificates to Advanced Students working beyond Curriculum level. Our Centre is amongst the first in Kenya to offer Digital Kumon for long-distance learning, students who are in cities/countries where Kumon is not yet available (prerequisite is a tablet and pencil, specifications to be given upon enquiry).

About the Instructor

A linguist by profession, I started my journey as a Kumon Instructor in 2000. It was a dream come true as I had always been passionate about educating children. I stress the word 'educating' as opposed to 'teaching' as it is my firm belief that children should not be 'spoon fed' by parents or private tutors, but 'empowered' to find and harness their own potential to become leaders in their society.

I became a Kumon Instructor when my own two daughters were aged 5 and 8 so I was able to implement the Kumon method with them as well. So, I too, have been through the ups and downs that come along in the Kumon journey because I was their Kumon Instructor as well as being their mother. I had to find ways of motivating my daughters, which I then shared with other parents at the centre.

Because of my effective communication with my Kumon parents, most of my enrolments come from word-of-mouth referrals. I share a personal yet strict relationship with my students, instilling in them the values of time management and goal-setting as early as possible. Moreover, I understand the huge part that parents play in their child’s Kumon journey; they place a tremendous amount of trust in me as the Instructor.

The most fulfilling moment in my Kumon journey came when, at a Regional Award ceremony, my older daughter who had completed both the Kumon Maths and English programmes, stepped in to address the students and parents about her Kumon journey. There were four other programme Completers at my centre that year.

In conclusion, I would like to share two of my favourite quotes:
"Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write or count. Childhood is a small window of time to learn and develop at a pace which is right for each individual child."
"Maths does not teach us how to add happiness or how to minus sadness but it gives us one great hope and that is every problem has a solution."

How long does study take?

Study takes around 30 minutes per subject a day, depending on age and level of the work. Currently, study may be In-Centre and/or at home with online or messaging support.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
 
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
