About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available
The Gaborone West Study  centre has dedicated staff members who specialise in instructing students. Our dedicated staff are continuously trained to instruct students to achieve their own personal best.
At Kumon Gaborone West, the sky is the limit. The fact that the programme focuses on developing every child’s ability to the maximum and caters for students who range from those with learning challenges to those that are gifted, fits Kumon Gaborone West perfectly. We acknowledge the fact that each of our students are individuals with their own needs, abilities and goals and we work with them accordingly. In addition to the different learning capabilities, we also cater for all ages at Kumon Gaborone West.
Our goal is to keep making positive changes in children’s lives and that includes every single child that crosses our path. We adjust the work to suit each child and their circumstances. Kumon becomes a team effort between our team, the student and their parents; the Kumon family.

About the Instructor

My name is Doris van der Merwe, and I am the Instructor of the Gaborone Village and Gaborone West Kumon centres. My journey with Kumon began in 1998, with both my children enrolling in the Kumon programme. I later joined Kumon as an assistant for a few years before starting my journey as an instructor. I completed my training and opened the Village centre in 2009. Over the years I have encountered many children who have struggled with their school studies, mostly Maths and English language. Kumon has extensive and well researched Maths and English programmes and students were very keen to excel in their Maths and English studies.
What is great about the Kumon programme is that it is a system of worksheets that have been created in a way that is suited to each child’s abilities, our program uses these worksheets to nurture their self-learning abilities. Kumon is for every student; from the weakest to the strongest and from the youngest to the oldest. I am also very proud to say that I have been acknowledged for having the greatest number of students completing the Maths, and English programmes, and as a result receiving Elite Instructor status on numerous occasions.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
