About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available
The Kumon Tena Study Centre opened in February 2020. The centre is located in an apartment, which makes it a friendly and welcoming environment, where students of all ages and abilities can learn as well as develop a positive attitude towards study.

Students may enroll from the age of 2 years. Many students continue with their Kumon studies for several years since the programmes support learning up to matric level for English, and beyond matric for Maths.

The centre has an area specifically for young students, which has a low student/staff ratio. This enables staff to focus on each child’s needs and to get them off to a flying start both at Kumon and at school.

After completing a Kumon assessment, your child will begin on the unique Maths and/or English Programmes at an individually set starting point, providing a solid foundation for effective learning.

As a Kumon student your child will develop invaluable study skills towards becoming an independent learner. In addition to studying an appropriate amount of work at home on a daily basis, your child will attend the Kumon Centre twice a week. Kumon’s long term focus provides children with the self-assurance to take their learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed.

The centre also has a library to support supplementary learning activities, and reading is encouraged.

About the Instructor

My name is Violah Mokoro. I am a trained Kumon Instructor and I am extremely enthusiastic about the Kumon Programmes.

I was first introduced to the Kumon Method ten years ago when I came into contact with Kumon students. I was so mesmerized by their learning habits that I needed to find out more. The change in abilities that I saw develop in the young students made me believe in the programmes, and that was the start of my journey. Being a professional Librarian, quality education and a love for learning has been a big part of my daily activities.

Discovering how Kumon develops a love for learning in students, and particularly how it nurtures self-learners, convinced me to become a Kumon Instructor.

I love the fact that Kumon allows for truly individualised study for each student. This gives them the time they need to cover a topic effectively, and to be able to master something before moving on to the next level. During school holidays, daily Kumon work continues to reinforce learning so that knowledge and understanding are not lost by time off.  The most appreciation I can give to students as an Instructor is seeing students completing work they did not think they were capable of doing, and watching their confidence grow  as they become independent, self-learners, even if they are grown-ups or more mature learners.

As a parent, I know the importance of nurturing responsible children, and my daughters are also Kumon students. They are both developing a culture of self-confidence and discipline.

The Kumon Programmes do require the commitment of the Instructor, parent and student. This commitment is worth it since I believe that by giving a child the right education, they are capable of accessing any opportunity and of making choices that will enable them to become successful in life.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
